heirloom techniques: honeycomb smocking

There was a recent roundup featuring smocked dresses, but I decided to showcase these honeycomb smocked creations separately since they felt a bit out of place in the previous collection. I’m excited to share them with you today—let’s get started! First off, Jane crafted a charming Garden Party Dress using chambray fabric. This was her very first attempt at honeycomb smocking, and it turned out beautifully. ![](https://via.placeholder.com/580x580?text=Jane's+Garden+Party+Dress) Next up, we have another Garden Party Dress, this time made by Julie in pristine white for a special occasion. The contrast between the delicate smocking and the pure hue is simply stunning. ![](https://via.placeholder.com/533x800?text=Julie's+White+Garden+Party+Dress) Jennifer joined in the fun by sewing a Badminton Top for the 4th of July celebration. The vibrant colors and intricate smocking details make it a standout piece. ![](https://via.placeholder.com/535x800?text=Jennifer's+Badminton+Top) Ana Sofia not only created a delightful Ice Cream Blouse but also shared a step-by-step Honeycomb Smocking Tutorial. Her attention to detail is impressive! ![](https://via.placeholder.com/580x597?text=Ana+Sofia's+Ice+Cream+Blouse) She revisited the same blouse design, this time using Liberty fabric for an even more whimsical touch. ![](https://via.placeholder.com/580x388?text=Liberty+Ice+Cream+Blouse) Erin rounded out our collection with an adorable Ice Cream Dress. The combination of playful prints and meticulous smocking makes it irresistible. ![](https://via.placeholder.com/480x640?text=Erin's+Ice+Cream+Dress) Inspired by Ana Sofia’s tutorial, I ventured into smocking myself. For my first attempt, I experimented with honeycomb smocking on the center panel of an Oliver + S Hide-and-Seek Tunic. I paired it with cream Playtime Leggings, and the result was exactly what I hoped for. ![](https://via.placeholder.com/549x800?text=My+Hide-and-Seek+Tunic) While my tunic wasn’t perfect, I found the pattern particularly suited to smocking. Following Ana Sofia’s method, I worked with six by sixteen dots, but extending the smocking across the entire center panel would enhance the effect. Other smocking styles could work equally well. To share my process briefly: I omitted the lining from the front center panel and positioned the smocking where the front yoke begins. After completing the smocking, I cut out the pattern pieces. Modifications included removing the V-neckline notch and seam allowances on the front and back yokes, while narrowing the tunic’s center panel to match the yoke’s width. I finished the neckline with bias binding. ![](https://via.placeholder.com/580x289?text=Steps+for+Adding+Honeycomb+Smocking) There are countless smocking techniques, but honeycomb smocking is ideal for beginners dipping their toes into the craft. Whether you try this technique or another, we’d love to see your creations in the Oliver + S Flickr group. --- (Ads by Google below) --- As always, there’s something magical about handmade garments. Each stitch tells its own story, and every project brings new lessons and joys. If you’re inspired to try smocking yourself, don’t hesitate—it’s a rewarding skill to master. Happy sewing!
