On the eve of 2009, Hangzhou, a city renowned for its silk heritage and women's fashion industry, once again became the center of attention with the launch of the 2009 China International Silk Expo and the China International Women’s Wear Exhibition. Held at the newly completed Silk City New Building on Fengqi Road, the event marked another milestone in the city's vibrant textile history. The opening ceremony not only added a brilliant chapter to Hangzhou's 2009 calendar but also reinforced its global reputation as the "Silk Capital" and "Women's Capital," where the fragrance of osmanthus fills the air both domestically and internationally.
The event was graced by the presence of numerous high-profile guests, including Wang Yu, Vice President of the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textiles, who presided over the opening. Other distinguished attendees included He Jihai, President of the China Chamber of Commerce; Wang Bingnan, Director of the Market Operation Regulation Department of the Ministry of Commerce; Wang Beiying, Director of the National Cocoon and Silk Coordination Office; Yi Hui, President of the China Silk Association; Freunskitz, Deputy Secretary General of the International Sericulture Commission; Pamomilzinov, Chairman of the Central Asian Silk Association; Ren Erlan, President of the German Designers Association; Wang Qing, President of the China Fashion Designers Association; and Zhang Bilai, Vice Chairman of the Hangzhou Municipal Committee of the CPPCC, among many other leaders and industry professionals.
Wang Bingnan, a member of the Hangzhou Municipal Committee, and Xu Qinhua, the Secretary-General, delivered speeches on behalf of the Ministry of Commerce and the city of Hangzhou, respectively. Xu Qinhua highlighted that after years of development and effort, the China International Silk Expo and Women’s Wear Exhibition have successfully taken place for nine consecutive years, playing a crucial role in promoting China's textile industry, expanding market access, and facilitating information exchange. As the birthplace of silk culture, Hangzhou has built a strong industrial foundation and continues to lead in the sector, home to numerous well-known silk and women's fashion enterprises. The city's brand identity as the "Silk Capital and Women’s Capital" has been firmly established, and it is now recognized as a "City of Quality Life" with a gold-plated city brand.
With continued support from the Ministry of Commerce and relevant associations, the event is expected to grow into an international platform for silk and women's fashion, further enhancing Hangzhou's charm and appeal. Attendees also included representatives from the commerce departments of Zhejiang, Chongqing, Ningxia, Guangdong, Sichuan, and other provinces and cities, along with executives from major silk and apparel manufacturing companies across the country, import-export traders, and business professionals from Italy, Germany, France, Japan, the U.S., India, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
Organized by the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China and the Hangzhou Municipal People's Government, the event received strong support from the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textiles, the Hangzhou Municipal Economic Commission, the Hangzhou Bureau of Trade, the Xiacheng and Jianggan District Governments, as well as the China Textile Industry Association, the China Chamber of Commerce, the China Silk Association, and various provincial and municipal cocoon offices and silk associations.
During the exhibition, eight themed events will take place, including the China International Silk Forum 2009, the Wulin Fashion Show, the Press Conference, the China International Women’s Design Grand Prix Finals, and the Costume High Skill Production and Dressing Model Contest. The event promises to be a dynamic and spectacular showcase of innovation, creativity, and excellence in the world of silk and fashion.
