China becomes the second largest supplier of French textile and apparel

In a recent report, France's "Textile" highlighted a shift in the country's textile import trends during the first half of the year. While Europe and France as a whole have seen a relative decline in clothing imports from China and other Asian countries, textile imports from Asia—covering not only traditional sources but also Mediterranean regions—have surged by 16%. This increase reflects a broader diversification of supply chains, with major European Union suppliers experiencing significant growth. China remains a key player in this market, with its textile exports to France rising by 21% to reach 3.2 billion euros. Turkey follows closely, with a 13% increase in textile imports, while India sees an 11% rise. Pakistan also shows strong growth at 11%, and Indonesia and Egypt are notable for their impressive increases of 30% and 31%, respectively. Looking at the broader picture over the first seven months of the year, France’s overall textile imports rose by 9%. Imports from Asia increased by 11%, and those from the Mediterranean coast grew by 17%. China remained the second-largest supplier of textiles to France, with a 17% sales increase. In contrast, India saw a slight decline, dropping to the eighth position with a 1% drop. Meanwhile, another country—though not named—rose to the sixth position, recording an 18% increase. Egypt, which had previously been lower on the list, climbed to 11th place, showing a 20% growth in textile imports. This data suggests that while some traditional suppliers like China are still strong, others are gaining ground, possibly due to shifting trade policies, cost factors, or evolving consumer preferences. As French demand continues to grow, it will be interesting to see how these trends develop in the coming months.
