The first jewellery and precious metal jewelry logo standard in Liaoning Province was issued in Dalian

In a significant move to bring clarity and transparency to the jewelry market, the "Diamond, Precious Metal, and Precious Metal Inlaid Jewelry Logo" standard has been officially released after being approved by domestic experts. Drafted by the Dalian Bureau of Quality and Technology Supervision and the Dalian Gold and Silver Ornaments Supervision and Inspection Center, the new regulation will take effect on December 30, 2011. This marks the first mandatory local standard in Liaoning Province aimed at regulating the identification of precious stones, metals, and their inlaid ornaments. With a wide range of materials such as platinum, gold, palladium, diamonds, jade, amber, rubies, sapphires, pearls, and crystals available in the market, consumers often find themselves confused by the variety of labels, unclear descriptions, and misleading terminology. Many products use vague or non-standard names, making it difficult for buyers to distinguish genuine items from imitations. As a result, many shoppers rely heavily on salespeople’s explanations, which can sometimes be misleading. Ms. Zhang, a customer who recently spent over 3,000 yuan on a product labeled “Three Sheeps,” shared her frustration. “I couldn’t tell whether it was jade or not. I just followed what the salesperson said.” This experience highlights a growing issue in the industry, where some businesses use ambiguous or incorrect terms to describe their products. For example, “composite cubic zirconia” might be labeled simply as “zircon,” or “jade” could be used to refer to any green stone, leading to consumer confusion and potential deception. According to Zhao Da, a member of the National Quality Inspection Expert Committee for Jewelry and a director at the Dalian Gold and Silver Ornaments Supervision and Inspection Center, there are serious issues with labeling in the jewelry sector. Some companies fail to clearly state the type of metal or gemstone used, while others use non-standard commercial names. In some cases, they even fabricate terms, further complicating the situation. He also pointed out that platinum and palladium, which look similar but have different values, are often mislabeled, leading to fraud. The new standard aims to address these problems by clearly defining key terms such as main stones, accessories, and inlaid jewelry. It introduces mandatory labeling requirements, ensuring that all products carry accurate information about their composition, quality, and value. This includes details like the manufacturer’s code, metal type, purity, and the weight of the main stone. Additionally, for jade and other gemstones, the label must include the name, quality, price, and relevant standards. The implementation of this standard is expected to greatly improve transparency and protect consumer rights. Before the new rules, there were only partial regulations on the naming and labeling of precious metals, while jade and inlaid jewelry lacked clear guidelines. With the rapid growth of the jewelry market, existing standards were no longer sufficient, prompting the need for a more comprehensive approach. As part of the transition, manufacturers and retailers will have one year to update their product labels. After the deadline, any jewelry that doesn't meet the new requirements will not be allowed to be sold. The Dalian Bureau of Quality Supervision will also conduct training sessions to help businesses adapt to the new rules and maintain a fair and honest market environment. For consumers, the new standard offers a valuable tool to make informed decisions. By requiring clear and accurate labeling, it reduces the risk of being misled and helps buyers choose high-quality, value-for-money jewelry. Zhao Da recommends that consumers purchase from reputable brands and large, well-managed stores. When buying diamonds or jade, it's wise to request an appraisal certificate from a certified agency. The Dalian Gold and Silver Ornaments Supervision and Inspection Center, the only legally authorized inspection body in the region, provides internationally recognized certificates that are valid nationwide. With this new standard in place, the jewelry market in Dalian is taking a major step toward greater transparency and consumer protection. It not only improves the accuracy of product information but also empowers buyers to make smarter choices in an increasingly complex marketplace.
